Could your city life be prematurely ruining your skin?

We all know that polluted city air plays havoc with your skin and will age you 10% faster than if clean country air.

While advanced research has detected 224  chemicals in polluted air which particularly dries our skin up and slows our collagen production, the beauty industry has been doing similar research to find solutions.

5 Ingredients for Suffering City Skin

1.  Niacinamide (B3): strengthens skin’s protective barrier

15 years of data and research proves that Niacinamide (a form of vitamin B3) can restore and strengthen the skin’s protective barrier, while improving skin hydration and promoting skin surface exfoliation.  Find it in Olay Total Effects Day Moisturiser SPF15 (£14.99).

2.  Detoxyl: stops iron and lead from sticking to skin

Detoxyl is an active ingredient that prevents metallic pollutants sticking to the skin by disrupting their bonding mechanism.  Find it in Lancôme City Miracle CC Cream (£29).

3.  Thymosin beta-4: attracts fresh cells to damaged skin

Thymosin beta-4 is a protein traditionally used to help regenerate tissue post heart-attacks. Scientists at Avon’s research and development department in New York  have recently discovered that it can also attract fresh, healthy cells to skin damaged by pollution and UV rays.

The trouble is, simply putting thymosin beta-4 into a cream is not effective, as the molecule is too big to get past the surface of your skin. Our bodies have naturally high levels of thymosin beta-4 but they start to deplete in our 30s.  So Avon screened more than two million compounds before hitting on a Himalayan plant used in Chinese medicine, which helps to stimulate your body’s own production of the protein. Find it in Avon Clinical E-Defence Deep Recovery Cream (£20).

4.  Sonic cleansing: removed sticky carbon particle PM2.5

Scientists have discovered a microscopic carbon particle of pollution known as PM2.5, which is sticky in texture and near impossible to shift with manual cleansing alone. So invest in a professional cleansing brush that oscillates or vibrates at super-sonic speeds to remove urban dust from your pores.

Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush (£71) has been found to lift these tiny carbon particles out of pores so effectively that 80% of pollution is removed.

5.  Moringa Seed: – natural detox

Moringa seed detoxes the skin and clinical trials have shown it can remove 94% of carbon particles.  Find it in Clarins Extra-Comfort Anti-Pollution Cleansing Cream (£25) and use it in the morning – it will also  leave an invisible film over your skin’s surface to protect it against further pollution.
