It is 40 years since the death of John Lennon. Who knows where he would have travelled musically over the past four decades.
The shooting of John Lennon outside the Dakota in New York on 8th December 1980 is baked into the childhood memories of most 50-somethings, alongside the deaths of Elvis and Marley. Had he survived, Lennon would be 80 this year and probably queuing for his Covid vaccine.
The sad irony was that 1980 marked the revival of his musical career after a five year hiatus. His album Double Fantasy and the single Just Like Starting Over, may not have been Lennon at his most innovative – Melody Maker described the album as “indulgent sterility … a godawful yawn”, but who knows where he would have travelled musically over the past 40 years. It is also easy to imagine him becoming highly active on a range of political, social and environmental issues.
