Results-focussed spas, medical treatments and medi spas that can treat ongoing conditions or aid a lifestyle reboot are not a new trend, but certainly a growing one.
After all, why pay all the money on a 5-star spa escape if you’re not going to see results – that last?
Though many will be familiar with the medical spas of Switzerland, those in the know now head to the Tuscan thermal spas, where mud treatments, thermal grottos and some of the world’s top therapists treat aches, pains, respiratory and skin complaints in the magical setting of the Tuscan countryside.
Two spas of note – Grotta Giusti and Bagni di Pisa – base their treatments on the use of thermal waters and offer not just luxe stays and R&R but results focussed therapies to rejuvenate skin, boost metabolism and bespoke programmes to kick start healthy living.
Grotta Giusti is located a short taxi ride from the pretty town of Lucca in Tuscany and the 19th century villa is classically Tuscan.
Giusti’s thermal waters feed its many attractions including the huge outdoor thermal pool which boasts over 35 different hydro massage jets. A second, smaller private pool is sectioned away for hotel guests.
The thermal waters, rich in bicarbonates, magnesium and sulphates reinvigorate the body and primo treatments for 50+ guests includes the use of thermal mud – made by mixing natural clays with the spring water – which matures for at least six months.
The mixture is heated to 47°C and then fed directly to the treatment rooms. The mature mud treatment induces perspiration to aid detoxifcation and aims to reduce inflammation and oxygenates tissues. The treatment also has a contracting and analgesic effect.
The additional effect of glowing and baby-soft, plumped-like-a-cushion skin is a bonus.
Both Grotta Giusti and its sister hotel, Bagni di Pisa, have doctors as well as therapists on hand and follow the PNEI, Psycho Neuro Endocrine Immunology, scientific approach, which essentially seeks to balance factors between the physical body and treat the emotional psyche as well.
The one-week Equilibrium programme works to address psyche, nutrition, exercise and includes therapeutic thermal treatments to initiate a new lifestyle choice.
It includes medical check ups, dietology, coaching, fitness, thermal therapeutic treatments and specially developed menus.
One of the most unusual treatments is the Watsu – a shiatsu in water experience, much like a floating yogic ballet, which proves soothing for those with lumbar and back pain.
The Watsu treatment is one of Grotta Giusti’s newest additions to its spa menu and takes place in the emerald waters of the grotto that lies deep underneath the hotel.
The gentle stretching and weightlessness is so serene it’s little surprise celebrities are raving about Watsu for its rebalancing and calming effects.
Bagni di Pisa is the perfect twin stop with Grotta Giusti – less than an hour away it was built as a summer residence for the Grand Duke of Tuscany and is an elegant retreat that offers thermal pools, exceptional dining and world-class therapists.
Visitors, celebrities and royalty pass through these doors to sample the rejuvenating benefits of the thermal springs.
The spa boasts an indoor Ponente Thermal Pool, where the natural temperature of 38° C is maintained, a Bioaquam Circuit featuring sculpting hydro-massages for toning and drainage, a rooftop thermal pool, again fed by the hotel’s natural thermal spring, plus a range of saunas and steam rooms.
Today more than ever we are looking to our spas for results. And the natural benefits of Tuscany’s stunning thermal springs cannot be denied.
Whether you want to soothe frazzled nerves, get away from it all or delve deeper, treat ongoing conditions or kickstart new lifestyle choices, there are more bespoke treatments and programmes than ever before.
